The first issue of this new series shows the promise that would be expected of both Dynamite Entertainment and Alex Ross. In Bring the Thunder we have the combination of contemporary events (the Afghanistan war) and the excitement of bringing to birth a new character closely associated with the military in Wayne Russell. This soldier is not only part of an elite squad of soldiers that specialize in the rescue of fellow soldiers, but is also a leader that cares for his men as much as he cares for his family, for they are also part of his family. It is the care that the writer and story plotters have taken to develop Russell's character that makes this comic standout from the others staring from the LCS shelves.
The execution of the art is splendid from the first sequence of panels depicting a struggle of super beings to the realistic depictions of Afghanistan in turmoil and the transformation experienced by Russell as he takes possession of the alien weapon.
There are several comics that are bringing the Afghanistan conflict to the comics world. As expected this is inevitable and a welcome contribution to pop culture.
