Gruesome, Strange and Awesome! (A Review of Marvel Zombies #1)

*It's hard to believe that the MARVEL ZOMBIES franchise is approaching the big "1-0", so I thought I'd take a look back at the first issue that got everyone on board the ZOMBIE bandwagon. And oh man, did they get on board.

Fans were given their first look inside the Marvel Zombieverse in ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, but Robert "The Walking Dead" Kirkman was brought in to create a 5-issue mini series of the characters. First off, the homage covers by Arthur Suydam are just a wonder to behold. Who doesn't love AMAZING FANTASY #15's cover with Spider-Man swinging over the city? Of course, this is a ZOMBIE Spider-Man, which makes it both awesome and terrifying.

The characters are introduced in a very in-your-face way. Magneto is running from his life as he's trying to survive a zombie-infested New York City that has been completely destroyed. The unique thing about the Marvel Zombies is that after they feed (and by the way, Magneto gets caught) for just a moment, they revert back to their old self...such as Hulk changes back into Banner (still a zombie) and Spider-Man feels remorseful for having eaten Mary Jane and Aunt May. Quite a clever take on the characters, and fans "ate" it up. Pun intended.

This initial series has led to an assortment of spin-off series, one-shots, even a few action figures and statues as well. While it never became as widely popular as Kirkman's "OTHER" zombie property, it is still held dear by many Marvelites as one of the coolest alternate dimension stories in the MCU. I think the characters are also included (or will be included) in the 2015 summer event SECRET WARS, but don't quote me.

So if you're a fan of MARVEL and zombies, I highly recommend you give MARVEL ZOMBIES a shot!
