The one and only reason that I picked this up is because I'm a huge Bruce Campbell fan. I've also been greatly anticipating the release of the movie that this comic is a loose adaptation of. If it's anything like the comic book, it's going to be a campy good time.
Now I don't know all that much about the source material (haven't seen the movie yet, of course), but the story here felt really rushed. I get the sense that they did this on purpose so that they could cram the entire "plot" into a one-shot comic. There is barely any setup for the events, no real background information or character development. Most of the narrative was handled by a couple of Ghosts who aren't happy about the lack of respect that young people have these days.
Whether or not these two ghosts actually appear in the movie or are simply utilized here as a narrative device is beyond me. We'll find out eventually though.
The art was commendable. I mean it worked. It wasn't very dynamic or particularly polished, but it told the story just fine. The colors really kept things vibrant though, especially Bruce Campbell's beloved Hawaiian shirt.
It should be noted that there is strong language used peppered throughout this book, nothing offensive, but I recommend having a read through before deciding on letting your kids read it.
I recommend it for the Bruce Campbell fans who have eagerly been awaiting the release of the movie. I get the feeling that not all of that much will be spoiled by reading it. It really does feel like more of a "Cliff notes" version of the movie. As for comparing it to other comic books, this one really wouldn't stack up with your favorite monthlies. There's nothing outstanding about it, it's just a quick, fun read.
