I was a huge fan of the Tv show before this, I picked up the mini series and the ongoing series back in the day. When I heard Terry McGinnis was gonna appear in Superman/Batman annual #4 and then get his own mini I was stoked.
**Spoilers ahead**
Now on to the Story, It feels like a new episode as I was reading it I could see it playing out in my head just like an episode of the cartoon. The writing was great it really felt like it was written by the cartoon writers.
The story has Terry running around just as much as he did in the cartoon, splitting his time between his social life, school with his “part time job.” You get to see a few old Villains in Spellbinder and Amanda Waller (although it could be said that in Beyond she’s not bad as she’s pretty much the reason Terry’s alive)
The story starts out with an escaped prisoner from Cadmus labs, we see the unidentified bad guy kill someone in an alley and take his jacket. He seems a little freaked to see the New Batman as he jumps over the gap between buildings in pursuit of Spellbinder. Batman fights Spellbinder and wins, after retuning to the cave and trying to catch a few Z’s a villain from Bruce’s past gets killed so Terry is on the job. After some investigation and a check in on another old Batman Villain the Mad Hatter all signs point to Two Face returning.
In the facility where Mad Hatter is being held a nurse is being attacked by the unknown assailant, when he hears Batman he bolts. Terry asks the Nurse about the attacker to get some clues, right before ht attacker attacks he tells her to “Hush.”
As said above the writing is top notch and the art is great, the artist is Ryan Benjamin his style is reminiscent of Scott McDaniels. It worked for the series as it’s based on a cartoon, I’ll leave you with this, returning to Batman Begins was great and I hope this mini leads to a new monthly title. While I’ve come to terms with the DCU being gone I can at least hope for a monthly comic.
