This is an amazing comic book. Just amazing.
Let's start with the art. Alan Davis...inked by Paul Neary. It is perfect. Ever panel is worth lingering over. It took me over a half hour to read this comic because I couldn't turn my eyes from each panel.
The renditions of Katana and Metamorpho, specifically, are the best I have ever seen for these characters.
the fight scenes are awesome. The action is clear and powerful.
Now to the story:
Ok, first, Baron Bedlam (whose stupid name is really the only negative here) has reincarnated Hitler in a clones body. He plans to re-start the reich. It's diabolical, twisted and scary. truly a worthwhile villain with a worthwhile plan.
Anyways, the Hitler clone is confused at first, so Baron bedlam has him watch old newsreels of nazis and of Hitler and of Jewish concentration camps and whatnot.
He also has a Jewish girl look after Hitler. He plans for Hitler to become aware, kill the Jew girl and lead the reich.
Well, in one of the most poignant comic moments ever....Hitler does become aware. He makes the connection between the swastika he wears and the nazis in the newsreels, as well as the star of David the Jew girl wears and the jews in the camps.
What Hitler does when he becomes aware....well, you HAVE to see it. Sooo powerful. The writing. The art. Everything. Very powerful.
Alright. The Outsiders have to fight through Bedlams' army, and the Masters of Disaster. The action is great, although, I'll admit the Masters are pretty lackluster villains.
The interesting note is that both Geo-Force and Looker kill in this comic....and it is kind of casual. Not what you'd expect from an 80's mainstream super hero book.
