Writer, Matt Fraction has a handful of things on the go here in the world of Uncanny. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? I haven't really decided yet.
In short, there are four main storylines all taking place at the same time:
1. A mutant virus known as HX-N1 is hitting the island residents of Utopia hard.
2. Warren Worthington has assembled a rag-tag team of mutants to help carry the X-mantle while the rest are sick.
3. Super genius Lobe has created a drug that allows rich people to have mutant powers.
4. Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde and Fantomex are transporting Shaw someplace to dispose of him.
I find the virus storyline interesting. It is cool seeing the mutants battle something other than other evil mutants. And in all reality, I don't doubt that a flu strand would mutate to affect only mutants. I also love that Wolverine is the hardest hit. It reminds me of him staving off his injuries right around the time of the Mutant Massacre (ahhh, a better time for my favourite character!)
Warren's team is what it is. They have done this one thousand times, and it never pans out. Dazzler seems to be the kiss of death for any X-team!
The idea of a mutant drug is so old that...I think Grant Morrison dreamed it up back in the 90's. Oh, and it was stupid then too!
I like the idea of Frost trying to take care of Shaw once and for all. After all, I think Sebastian Shaw is one of the coolest characters not used in the Marvel U. The back story told about Shaw and Frost was disturbing. Not surprising, but disturbing none-the-less. I was however, surprised by Fantaomex's ignorance of Shaw's power. Ultimately though, I'm sure it is just to provide more options for future stories.
I'm not entirely sure why Fraction feels the need to create such a convoluted universe. Save some of these stories for future storylines.
In closing, parts of this story were good and parts were mediocre. Which, I suppose, makes the whole story average at best? On a side note, the cover for #532 looks really good!
