Humanity and the Gods

In "The Death Wish of Terrible Turpin" appearing in New Gods (Vol 1) #8 we see a magnificent confrontation between Orion and Kalibak. The full savagery of these two immortal opponents is in full display only the way Jack Kirby could orchestrate; with full drama, action and tight dialogue.

Each panel has meaning beyond the words expressed, especially the heroic actions of Daniel Turpin; a simple mortal that goes toe-to-toe with a God and survives. Mind you he is not the only mortal that feels the heroic impulse to tackle a God, for we also have Dave Lincoln, Orion's friend and ally representing the best of humanity.

But the main event is reserved for Orion and Kalibak for it's their encounter that will shake the foundations of Metropolis; these two representatives of New Genesis and Apokalips, respectively, representatives of their respective worlds and the hatred for each other that they embody.

How fitting that this story opens with Turpin suffering the consequences of his encounter with Kalibak and ends with him and Mr Lincoln being dragged from the scene of the battle by their friends, no detail is lost to Kirby as he winds up one of the most exciting stories in the Fourth World Saga.
