Armageddon 2001 was a two issue series that bookended a dozen annuals in 1991 and I may be in the minority but I really enjoyed this series. I can remember walking into my local Rexall Pharmacy and being drawn in by the cover to Armageddon 2001 #1 and thinking how cool it looked. I paid my eight quarters and rushed home to read it, now I know it had its faults (which were addressed in the pages of JSA & The Battle for Blüdhaven) but the overall story concept was phenomenal, because it was dark and gritty and kept me interested in the outcome. Armageddon 2001 was presented as a mystery for you to figure out which hero turned to the dark side and killed all heroes so he could take over the world as the tyrant Monarch. In the dozen annuals between issues Waverider used his abilities see into the possible futures of several heroes all the while with his hand around their hearts ready to squeeze if he found the one who would become Monarch. Now I won’t give away the ending just in case there is anyone who hasn’t read this story, so I’ll just say if you’re looking for a great story with a mediocre ending you should give this a try. If you can’t find Armageddon 2001 in trade these are the single issues you’ll need to collect: Armageddon 2001 #1-2; Action Comics Annual #3; Adventures of Superman Annual #3; Detective Comics Annual #4; Flash Annual #4; Batman Annual #15; Hawk and Dove Annual #2; Hawkworld Annual #2; Justice League America Annual #5; Justice League Europe Annual #2; L.E.G.I.O.N. Annual #2; Superman Annual #3; New Titans Annual #7. Happy Readings!
