Leviathan Rising

A new threat is rising. Across the country, secret organizations are being wiped out by an unknown force. The attacks started with the Kobra Cult, then the D.E.O. and A.R.G.U.S. fell. After Amanda Waller arrived at the front door of Lois and Clark Kent, they are immediately thrust into the fight against this unseen force. The only thing they have to go on is a name given by Amanda Waller before she passed out: Leviathan.

(Spoilers Incoming)

Despite passing out in the Kent’s apartment, Amanda Waller awakens inside the new Fortress of Solitude. She wakes to Clark and Lois watching multiple news feeds about the recent attacks, before Lois lashes out at her. She lashes out at Amanda for coming to their home and potentially exposing their secret to whomever this secret enemy is. Amanda tells them that she was meeting with General Lane when they were attacked, when she tells Lois that her father is now in the hospital but should survive. Superman then flies off to try to unravel what is happening, leaving Waller and Lois in the Fortress. Lois attempts to get information from Waller about Leviathan, but when she is unable to give Lois anything to go on, Lois attacks Waller, leaving her unconscious.

In Columbus, Superman finds General Lane in the hospital and is greeted in the room by the Question. Question reveals that despite all the destruction at A.R.G.U.S., there wasn’t a single body found in the wreckage. Superman and the Question then agree that this “might be a big one”. Superman then flies to Japan to the former base of Talia Al Ghul, where he finds a note from Leviathan reading, “We want the same thing.” The Man of Steel then goes to the Batcave, where Alfred tells him that Batman is unavailable, but they agree that this type of madness doesn’t fit with Talia’s usual actions. Superman leaves the cave and travels to the D.E.O. where he finds Director Bones kneeling in the rubble. However, when Superman extends his hand to help the fallen director, Bones lashes out at Superman, blaming him for knowing about the attacks and not stopping them. After returning to the Fortress, Superman joins Lois, Waller and the now awake Jimmy Olsen in figuring out their next move. When Jimmy brings up the targets having a common link between all of them and Talia, one name comes up: Spyral. Superman reveals that the spy organization has gone into lockdown, shutting everyone out. Superman and Lois then decide what their next move needs to be: infiltrate Spyral.

When Question and Superman agreed that this would be a “big one”, they were right. We know that what happens in the next few issues of Action Comics will lead into the next big event for DC. Before now, Leviathan was limited to the old Batman Incorporated series before the title ended. We haven’t really seen or heard from Talia’s organization since, but now they seem to be primed for a comeback. With the Year of the Villain being set up throughout multiple titles, Leviathan is here now, laying the groundwork for a year of terror and chaos. And on a personal note, it was really satisfying to see the Question back. He’s been sporadically popping up in Action Comics over the last few months, and I hope to see him play major role in the months to come.
