*The recent battles the X-Men were involved in have left too many loose ends, too much unfinished business, so Cyclops has tasked the New Mutants team to take care of it. He chooses Dani Moonstar to lead the team, much to Dani's surprise.
The team is far from peak efficiency: the former leader, Cannonball, has been out of commission since he was tortured on a mission, team member Magik has been placed under arrest for endangering the entire world with her magical powers and the mutant known as X-Man has recently joined the team from another dimension, after being drained of all his telekinetic powers by a super villain's sadistic experiments.
