"Vengeance from Valhalla!"
While speeding to a meeting of the All-Star Squadron, Johnny Quick spots a figure resembling the Sandman falling from a building. Johnny rescues him but finds it's not the Sandman but a hero called the Tarantula, wearing a similar purple-and-gold costume.
The stranger explains he based the design on a sketch given to him by Dian Belmont while he was researching a book on the "Mystery Men" who were popping up with such regularity. Not long after receiving the sketch, he made his debut against Nazi saboteurs in an incident that caused the apparent death of Dian and a meeting with the Sandman.
As Tarantula wraps up his story, the group is attacked by an old Sandman villain, "Fairytales" Fenton, who believes he's Thor and who now possesses a powerful blue hammer.
After defeating Fenton, the Squadron receives word that the light atop the Trylon at the old World's Fair site is blinking a challenge to them, so they head out to investigate.
