Still waiting for a good Moon Knight book...
We all wanted it. A Moon Knight comic finally done right. Instead, we got this.
The first 6 issues are written by Warren Ellis, art by Declan Shalvey. I am a big fan of Shalvey's art, and I was happy to see a decent artist would be working on Moon Knight. As for Warren Ellis, I had no opinion of his writing at the time, so I was just hoping for things to work out when that shiny issue #1 dropped. I now know that neither Ellis nor Shalvey are the issue when it comes to this book. The issue I have with Moon Knight is the way they chose to write the issues.
Every new issue of Moon Knight is a new story. Yes, that's right. They try to pack an entire story, conclusion and all, into one issue, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Most of the time this just leaves the comic feeling rushed. Some of the stories would have been so awesome if they were stretched over 3 or 4 issues, but instead you get a lukewarm, rushed version of what could have been a fantastic story arc. But at least it had good art, right? WRONG.
Issue 7 switches from Ellis and Shalvey, to writer Brian Wood and artist... Greg Smallwood?. Yeah, I don't know who he is either. And boy, I wish I never discovered who Greg Smallwood is. His art is such a step down from Shalvey's that it made it even harder to push through reading Moon Knight in hopes that it will pick up.
Hopefully Cullen Bunn and Ron Ackins can lift Moon Knight up in issues #13 - #18, but at this point i'm not getting my hopes up.
