From the
DCU Review:
Williams and Blackman do so many things right in this series. First, the art is beautiful. It’s one of the best-looking books in the New 52. There’s a line later in the book where Batwoman tells Batman she’s not really looking for a costume change. Glad to hear it. It’s a terrific costume as-is.
Kate’s relationship with Detective Sawyer is interesting on two levels. First, its very real. It’s not some over-the-top romance. It’s a well-paced relationship at the early stages. For all the complaints on the net about oversexed comics in the New 52, Kate’s “goofy” excuses to turn down Sawyer’s office to come inside at the end of their date should be a welcome change of pace.
Cameron Chase is a great adversary. I vaguely remember this character from years ago. She even had a short-lived series at one point. Not that memorable. She’s a bit too stereotypical in the badass, authoritarian government agent role, but that just makes me want to see Batwoman defeat Chase even more. Still, the character could use a little more depth. Batman says she is driven by hate, but what is the origin of that hate?
Not much happens in the Weeping Woman case. I’m not sure how the were-beast/unsub gang war relates. Hopefully, it’s not another concurrent plot line. There’s enough going on as is.
Batman drops in briefly at Batwoman’s request. Between this issue and the last, Batman invited Batwoman to join Batman Inc., his worldwide organization of Batmen. She’s still on the fence about it. “Daddy issues,” as she says while discussing it with Bette. After delivering some requested intel and a warning about Chase, Batman “requests” that Batwoman keep Flamebird out of the Weeping Willow case until she knows what she’s dealing with: “Murdered sidekicks tend to come back from the dead. As super-villains.” This, of course, is a reference to Jason Todd, and it’s a nice addition to the conversation.
I do think this book could use a bit more excitement. It is a superhero comic. While I enjoy the procedural aspects of the story quite a bit, the nearly non-existent main villain takes some of the momentum from the overall story.
Looks like next issue we see Batwoman vs. the Weeping Woman + Batwoman vs. Chase. Things about to get crazy!
