Captain Allen Adam of the USAF is trapped inside an experimental rocket carrying an atomic warhead. When it detonates in space, Adam is converted to pure energy. He re-integrates at the Air Base, and requests material to fashion a suit which shields others from his radioactivity. The government gives him the code name Captain Atom.

*What the USA has feared has come to pass: the Soviets have put a man in space before us. What the Soviets haven't shared is that the capsule has been radio silent. Captain Atom investigates to find the cosmonaut is critically injured. He returns to Earth for needed medicines, and revives the cosmonaut, who now questions which country won the race to space.
