Mr. Crow notes that Uncle Gabby has indulged in reading poetry and staring at the stars. He notes this to Ann-Louise, who is certain that Uncle Gabby is lonely. She embarks on buying him a female sock monkey for a wife, a modern toy of a thing. Ann-Louise and Mr. Crow deliver the new companion to Uncle Gabby's while he is out on an errand, and find an old elephant doll, which they dispose of, leaving the new toy instead. They have erred, unaware that the elephant is the object of Uncle Gabby's affection. The love-lorn rampage that ensues when Uncle Gabby finds out is comic-tragedy at its best.
