September, 1948: At the new Connecticut B.P.R.D. headquarters, we see that something is eating Agent Anders. Professor Bruttenholm watches him with concern, while consulting with the spirit of Varvara. Anders has one close relationship in the organization, that as guardian of the young Hellboy, who is quickly growing up and showing a propensity for trouble. Elsewhere, in the Utah desert, an Air Force experiment to use nuclear blasts to catapult space capsules into orbit goes wrong. Dr. Anna Rieu senses this, but when a monstrous flying creature haunts the nearby desert, the Bureau is called in. Professor Bruttenholm meets the scientific team, and is captivated by Dr. Rieu, who herself is obsessed with what she has glimpsed in space, the other-worldly Ogdru Hem.
