Low On Fuel...and Substance, But Readable! (A Review of Mad Max #1)

With the amazing sleeper success of George Miller's MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, fans can't seem to get enough of a look inside of Max Rockatansky's world. Even the old films have become quite interesting to old and new fans alike in light of the 2015 summer blockbuster. And since I was fortunate enough to find copies of the other two books (Nux & Immortan Joe and Furiosa) I thought I'd give the book featuring the lead character a shot.

The story retells the origin of MAX in a series of flashbacks from the death of his family, to his journey into the wasteland (as seen in all 3 original MAD MAX films). In this issue, Max travels to Gastown to compete in a battle for a V8 engine. (Fans of the original MAD MAX film remember that his vehicle contained what was thought to be the LAST of the V8 engines.) What ensues is a vicious battle in which Max is the winner, but earns the ire of a group of scavengers when Max kills their fighter with a weapon given by a woman who was in the audience of spectators. There's more blood and more fighting and essentially we're brought to the crux of the issue: Max is asked to help.

I think this story could have been told in a single issue, but hey, if DC thinks they can sell another issue of a MAD MAX book, I'm all for it. Personally, I would have liked to have seen an indy publisher pick up this license, as I believe there's some really interesting tales of MAX that could continue to "drive" sales (no pun intended. But I am glad to just see a MAD MAX comic on the stands. When these were initially ordered, I believe these titles caught comic retailers off guard as orders seemed to be rather light on the initial NUX & IMMORTAN JOE title, but this issue seems to be fairly readily available. If you like MAD MAX, buy the book. Otherwise, I suggest putting your $5 into something else. I am glad I own at least a single copy though to round out my trinity of MAD MAX titles.
