Warren Ellis' Supergod had a few things going for itself. First, it was an original premise that took the superhero and brought it to the ultimate conclusion of godhood. But not just one god, but several engaged in a global struggle for dominion on behalf of different earthly States. It had a great writer and great artists to deliver on the vision. What is did not have was a coherent or sustainable story line that would allow the reader to actually care about the story. Lets start with the title itself: Supergod is an oxymoron in that there is nothing beyond godhood, so adding Super does nothing. Once you have brought forth gods, why would they respond to humans, the lesser beings, at all. This is more like the creation of the nuclear bomb, than the creation of gods. We have entered the world of mutual assured destruction (MAD) but with super-beings as the bomb; a struggle to end all struggles or the beginning of hell on Earth.
Could the treatment of the story be any different once you have started on this path of god creation, possibly if you had in mind a higher purpose; to move the citizenry to deal with the intractable problems of energy and resources sustainability, human rights at a global scale, the struggle to feed humanity and the problems of global climatic changes and what humanity can and should do about it. There is no self-awareness from the Supergods regarding the higher needs of any life form, survival and propagation. These are the missed opportunities that Ellis could have tackled through the ingenious creation of Supergods, but was missed and instead we were left with unfulfilled potential and a lessening of awareness to what ails us as a race and what needs to be done for future generations.
