After reading some of the reviews from fellow X-fans, I was a little reluctant to read this book. I hate being let down. Surprisingly, I thought it was pretty good! The art was sub-standard, but the writing was strong.
The story picks up on Utopia where the X-Club; under the not so careful supervision of Emma Frost, are left with the task of whipping up a cure for the new vampiric virus the vampires have unleashed. At their mercy are 6 scared, infected civilians and one primitive vampire.
All hell breaks out and the virus is discovered to be psychic in nature. Yada, yada, yada, none of which is very intriguing! The hook for me was Dr. Nemesis' many interactions with Emma Frost. These two character were born to be together. I'm not even kidding, I need to see these two in a mini-series together. Even just the fact that they both wear white...too perfect. Their back and forth throughout the issue is hilarious. But despite their venomous barbs, I was sure that I would turn the page to find them making out in the next panel. Unfortunately I was wrong....but it was still entertaining.
Dr. Rao and Dr. Jefferies were stagnant throughout the issue, despite writer Simon Spurrier's attempts to bring them to life. And Gabriel Hernandez Walta's art just plain sucked. In fact, I am not sure what the current fascination is with artists who create books that look like really poor sketch books. None for me thanks.
When all was said and done, I enjoyed the writing enough to overlook the poor art. I think the introduction of this team was a smart idea on the part of the House of Ideas. Oh, and the cover by Clayton Crain was awesome!
