I made the dumb mistake of assuming this was the third chapter of the actual Utopia storyline itself and just bought it without really looking to see what it was.
Completely stupid of me.
Because when I got home, I looked at it before I was about to read it and thought "oh geez, what have a really bought here...".
I read it anyway, with little hope of it being decent, as Marvel's pointless tie ins like these have a reputation for being shoddy and a waste of money.
But I was pleasantly surprised, this was actually rather fun.
You get 3 stories in here, and they just tell you about how some of the characters on the new Dark X-Men team got to be in that team.
The first one is about Namor, and it's somewhat enjoyable with good artwork, although the endless banter gets a little tedious a few pages in.
The second feature is about Mimic, and it's basically just back story on his mental conditions, and to be honest, for someone like myself who knows nothing about Mimic, this was cool to see. It was all mainly about the artwork though, which was decent enough to enjoy. It's cool to see that Mimic now has a badass beard and shiz going down.
The third and final story is about Dark Beast, it's probably the best story in here because it's got a creepy tone with it's what looks like painted artwork (even though the anatomy is a little off) and the dialouge is decent. Very character building for Dark Beast. So this one was decent.
All in all though, whereas this was just an ok issue. I will not be reading on, as the stories which might be a little cool, they are ultimetly pointless and we don't need to know this.
If Marvel must insist on putting these stories in a seperate mini series like this, then smack the price down from 3.99 too 2.99 at least.
Otherwise they may as well just be put in as backup features in the issues of Utopia themselves, as we're paying 3.99 a chapter for that story anyway.
You can avoid this.
