I finally managed to force feed my way through reading this story two days ago after years of not being able to make it through the first 12 pages.
In this period of the X-Men/Wolverine continuity, (
if my comic memory serves me correctly) the world believes the X-Men are dead (
can't recall if they stepped through the Seige Perilous yet, or this was a result of the Fall of the Mutants storyline...or a little of both) and Wolverine has taken up residence in Madripoor under the alias of "Patch". In true Clark Kent-like fashion, the world can't recognize Logan when he's wearing this eyepatch.
Ok, that's a stretch.
BUT for the sake of argument, let's go along for the ride. When he goes out to do "
what Wolverine does best", he wears a garish ebony and red sleeveless spandex...workout suit with what appears to be...
fishnet(?) across the eyes?!? Seriously, Mr. Claremont, what the heck is that all about? Where's the bada$$ brown from the mini-series?
There is some connection to his Japanese connections, as he goes to rescue a valued friend of the woman he loves, Mariko who is a survivor of a plane crash. Regardless, the artwork is ok, and the story is just ok, too. While giving Wolverine his own series made TOTAL sense from a money-making standpoint, as a character, seeing him appearing in everything from Terror, Inc to New Warriors to sell issues really weakened the 'cool factor' for the hero for me. I liked the mystery of NOT KNOWING everything about Wolverine.
However, Wolverine has
ALWAYS been popular and can sell the heck out of books. You can bet this one will be a sought after commodity a few weeks before the movie comes out, but, don't be surprised if the market is flooded with Wolverine stuff, making the price drop slightly once the movie hits, and on into the weeks that follow. But, personally, I do think it's a good long-term investment book, by long term I mean 20 years+.
