I'm not really sure what motivated me to pick this comic up. I have to admit that I have become a bit pickier with my comic purchases over the last few months, as I have felt as though the comic landscape has become a little saturated. I enjoyed certain aspects of the original storyline, but there were other parts that really bugged me. Regardless of my rationale, I'm really glad I picked this book up.
The Ramos wrap around cover was adequate at best. And this is coming from a Ramos fan. It seemed a little rushed and lacked Ramos' usual stylization which I know and love.
The story features a team-up between the Secret Avengers and the Young Allies. I collect the Secret Avengers, so them I am familiar with. This is my first book featuring the Young Allies, so their line-up was a pleasant surprise. There was a nice chemistry between the teams and their characters. I was instantly intrigued by Steve Rogers relationship with the Young Allie known as Nomad.
The interior art is handled by someone I have never heard of before, Filipe Andrade. I may have never heard of him before, but he is certainly on my radar now! Absolutely beautiful lines! He is a little bit Ramos and little bit Skottie Young mixed with some Mike Mignola thrown in. The bottom line is, his artwork made this issue!
The story itself flows nicely, and has a refreshing feel of "new", which is so important when reusing an old story device. Writer, Sean McKeever has a boatload of very different characters to cover in this issue, but he handles their voices with distinction, making their interactions very natural.
Nothing beats a pleasant surprise in my weekly comic stack. It almost doesn't even matter that Onslaught is back. This book is so good it can do without him!
