In this issue we begin to learn a little bit about the old JJJ (J. Jonah Jameson) … and I mean the OLD JJJ. While Spider-Man scrambles to save people from a collapsed subway tunnel, we learn that one of the people he is trying to save is his old employer’s dad. This story is Spider-Man at his best… classic Spider-Man! It was fast paced, exciting, and had every bit of human emotion that makes a great story.
As I said in my last review of issue 578, the artist on this arc is not my favorite, but the art is ok. It grew on me. I think the story was so captivating that it helped me to enjoy the artwork. I prefer much more detailed art, but the story line was so good, I was able to enjoy the panels.
The writing was fantastic. Of course, nothing but the best from Mark Waid. This story was fun, exciting, and I absolutely loved the weaving of the sub story about JJJ’s dad. This was not just a story of Spidey saves the day, but of Spidey saves the dad! And, with each measure of progress they make toward escape, Spidey can literally fell the enjoyment he will get when he rubs the previous owner of the DB’s face in the fact that the object of his hatred saved his dad. Very cool.
However, as most classic Spidey tales go, there is a twist, and you will just have to read this issue to see what it is. The ending made me mad, but the fact that the story produced such emotion in me is a tribute to the writing. Get this one. It is a great read.
