The only reason I picked up IDW’s Doorways was because of George R. R. Martin’s involvement, after all he is one of the best fantasy writers still working and his creations are unique and classic. The Doorways first issue is definitely well crafted and engaging from the first issue. The premise is as unique as it can be when dealing with issues of alternate reality and zombie-like monsters. What makes it unique, or better than most is the writing and the attempt at world creation that is serious and not condescending to the reader, like most out there.
Evil lurks behind doorways that can be opened with certain organically derived advanced technology and the government wants a piece of the action. The only person they can question about this technology is herself trying to survive a pack of manhounds that are in search of her and what she carries.
The artistic contribution Stefano Martino and Shawn Lee are definitely at par with the Martin’s narration. This is a good start to what may become the sleeper story of the year.
