Some people can't catch a break.

This one-shot made me feel as though I was back in the 80’s again, sitting in my bedroom reading Cloak and Dagger’s first mini-series. Tyrone and Tandy, battling the world, and seemingly never able to fit in. And just like back then, this one-shot was both entertaining and insightful.

Like most of the occupants of the island Utopia, Cloak struggles being penned up, isolated from the outside world. For a superhero such as Cloak though this poses few problems, as he is one of the world’s most powerful teleporters. Tyrone uses his unique gift to make visits to his old neighbourhood in Boston. He reconnects with old acquaintances, and starts to feel as though maybe he can rebuild his life.

All the while, Dagger looks to fit in on Utopia. Everyone loves her, but when Nemesis tells her that she is not a mutant, Tandy starts to feel as though she has no place on this mutant haven.

Tyrone’s new-found confidence betrays him when he finds himself in the hands of yet another group of “inferiority complexed” homo-sapiens. His most reliable dance partner shows up, and together they realize that they may never know a normal life.

The story was simple but good. Mark Brooks’ art really made this story sing. He has a way with drawing both Cloak and Dagger which makes them incredibly beautiful. Cloak and Dagger’s retreat from Utopia is the X-Men’s loss. Cloak especially proved useful in past situations.

I love Cloak and Dagger. I hope this heralds in a new Claok and Dagger series. Tandy looked H-O-T in this book. Great characters and stunning artwork.
