Let me just start off by saying that Jonathan Hickman was born to write this style of book. His work on Secret Warriors has been exemplary and this inaugural issue of S.H.I.E.L.D. follows the same pattern. There is something very real about Hickman’s writing. His stories don’t come across as the type of material you would expect to see in a comic book. In fact, it is almost as though he is retelling a particular event in history.
S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 takes a look back at the origins of S.H.I.E.L.D.. And like any good organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. has its roots firmly planted throughout some of mankind’s most storied historic moments. It seems that, so long as there were threats to the planet Earth, there was S.H.I.E.L.D.. And of course, what kind of an organization would S.H.I.E.L.D. be if the most famous inventor of all time, Leonardo da Vinci wasn’t a part of this organization.
Like all of Hickman’s stories, S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 reveals a great deal of information while still holding back an intriguing number of secrets. Dustin Weaver’s illustrations, matched with Christina Strain’s colours was just the icing on the cake.
This looks to be another winner from Hickman, so jump on while the gettings good.
