Saying goodbye isn't always easy, and it hits closer to home when it's family.
I understand a picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words, but in this case, words would have been nice. Fantastic Four #588 marks the end of the series as well as the end of an era of the FF as we've known them. A silent issue, we see the cast of the FF coping with the death of Johnny Storm over the course of 30 days.
(Oh yeah, nothing sucks worse than buying two copies of an issue for the story and being told by the owner of the comic shop that you're buying a silent issue. *sighs*)
First off, I did enjoy this issue. It had nice moments and did offer the cast a little closure in the face of tragedy. But one thing that bothered me was the lack of closure I received as a reader who was invested in Hickman's run on FF.
I was anxious to see and hear the emotions and reactions from the rest of the FF family and the Marvel Universe in response to Johnny's death. Instead, I felt I was on the outside looking in...like a neighbor who can't help the family next door who is in mourning.
On the bright side, I did enjoy the Spider-Man/Franklin Richards follow-up story in the back of the book. The connection the two have is a real thing, and if the rest of the book had this feeling, I think I would have enjoyed the book 10 times more.
By the way, this is the first Spider-Man story I've enjoyed in a LONG time. But...it does appear this isn't the last time I'll see Spidey in an FF title. *HINT HINT*
So buy yourself a copy to close out the run, but I think the majority of the book was a missed opportunity to really close out this series strong.
