In Hard Boiled #2 Frank Miller kind of leaves me behind. The Tax Collector/Insurance Investigator (Frank needs to decide which one he is) now is officially gone whacky. This crazed cyborg definitely has outdone all similar characters in the amount of violence he takes and dishes out. This is probably one of the most violent comics I have read in a long time. So, Frank Miller has out done himself in an area in comics that has definitely gathered steam in the last decade.
The art work of Geof Darrow brings such level of detail to each panel that one could follow the story without the text, an amazing feast for a Miller comic, I know. But in this comic Frank’s plotting is all over the place so his writing is not much help.
The theme of the story is hard to summarize. Computers reign in Frank’s world, but the relationship between the master computer and Nixon, or is it Burns, is not yet obvious. There seems to be too much self indulgence governing this comic from the extreme violence, sexual content and general mayhem without a good plot line to follow. Maybe the third and last issue will enlighten this reader.
