This book is full of energy! (non-radioactive of course)

Having been a LONG time reader and fan of the Valiant Comics published back in the 90's, that alone was enough to make me pick up the newest incarnation of the Gold Key character.

On board as writer is the legendary Jim Shooter, a man that Valiant fans consider the Master of their universe, having launched Valiant into the incredible success it was initially (and if you've never heard THAT story, I invite you to research it. It's fascinating.)

Eluding to most of the original story from the character's beginnings in the 60s, most of the basic concepts are kept intact, but updated somewhat for a newer audience. The writing is typical Shooter...timed out as if the characters are reading from a pre-ordained script like they themselves are actors.

While the series' focus IS obviously the original GOLD KEY stuff, you can't help but be drawn back towards the VALIANT stuff Shooter himself wrote for the character. In fact, I'm not sure if ANY incarnation could escape the Valiant stereotype. But why would they? Most readers I've spoken with elude to the fact that ANY Valiant "Pre-Unity" (the era created by Shooter before Bob Layton become the man behind the curtain) title was an incredible read.

While the main story is a good wholesome dinner, the dessert is the extra story from the first issue of the original DOCTOR SOLAR. It's timeless in it's fun and energy.

If you're looking for a solid read that is somewhat innocent in it's origins and a clean break from everyday capes, this is a book for you.

Everything new is old is new again.

This was a good first issue (not great). I agree the original Dr. Solar story was the best part of the book and it will be interesting to see how much of the Valiant history they include in the future
