This was the FCBD diamond in the rough. VERY cool book.

I drove to my local comic shop today and did my patriotic duty. I grabbed a handful of free swag for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2010. In my stack, I found lots of stuff to get me excited about stuff I was...well, already excited about.

THEN, I found this DOCTOR SOLAR/MAGNUS book.

As you can see by my CCL handle, I am an old-school Jim Shooter pre-Unity VALIANT fan, collector and reader. Long before BLACKEST NIGHTS, ULTIMATUMS, and HEROES REBORN, I was standing in front of the VALIANT booths at cons with my handmade VALIANT t-shirt praying to the gods that Don Perlin or Kevin VanHook might toss me a Gold ARCHER AND ARMSTRONG #1.

Now, this book has little to nothing to do with the VALIANT days. In fact, it's a complete do-over. BUT...the good news is, it stands alone as being a solid read with breadth, width and depth that only a writer like the legendary JIM SHOOTER can deliver. Before I left my comic shop, I informed the owner to PLEASE reserve all the DARK HORSE GOLD KEY revamps, including DOCTOR SOLAR, MAGNUS and TUROK when they come out....incentives too.

If you love a good story, you'll love this book.

That's how comic characters become legendary.
