I really enjoyed Tom Hanks' movie BIG when I was younger. Obviously, so did Mark Millar, because he decided to fashion this story after it!
I decided to pick this book up based on how much I enjoyed Millar's first two Icon series (Kick Ass and Nemesis.) Throw Leinil Francis Yu on the pencils and I was sure this would be an easy sell. Little did I know this book was going to be so short on creativity.
A young boy who is cripple; other than the cape I guess this is Millar's creative contribution, makes a wish and becomes "big"...with a cape. He hides in the upstairs of his mom's house so she won't see him, but is forced to leave, knowing she wouldn't understand (BIG). He goes to confide in his best friend (BIG). So replace toy creator with superhero, and you have the same story. It even has the same feel as the movie BIG, thanks to the setting and the early character dynamics.
Thanks, but no thanks. I intend to pass on this rip-off and can't believe Millar would have the stones to call this his own.
