Feeling more like a lost "
SECRET INVASION" cross-over than a epilogue to cosmic spanning sagas like
ANNIHILATION and the
THANOS IMPERATIVE,
Annihilators #4 was my favorite in the series. Maybe it was because it had my favorite cosmic guys in it trying to do cosmic stuff, or maybe it's because it's the last issue. You buy the book and decide.
In this final book in the series, we learn more about Doctor Dredd, and the fact he's really a Skrull looking to unite the his race (who haven't had the best luck lately) with the Dire Wraiths, who also aren't batting 1000.
I've watched the series featuring some of the Marvel Universe's most powerful mainstays through the whole series, and I have to say...I'm not completely sold on this group. I have been buying comic books that these guys appear in individually for years, but seeing them all together trying to jockey for screentime is difficult. Not only that, but it doesn't make much sense. The book is called Annihilators. Their mission? They Annihilate. And in the end, they peacefully bring the SpaceKnights and Dire Wraiths together to exist in harmony, with the Silver Surfer delivering the following line:
"Sometimes annihilation is not the answer. Sometimes power must be used constructively."Uh, no. I didn't buy this book to watch a peaceful solution unravel. I bought this book so I could see the ultimate bad-a$$ that Marvel had to offer dish some out! They can merge suns, but they can't defeat a Skrull. They can move a planet, but 1 of the team can't fight Tempus.
TEMPUS. In the end, I feel like I'm left watching the end of
STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 and Quasar, who I watched grow as a character through all these last few cosmic events is
dangerously close to being this group's
Jar Jar Binks.
What saves this book, given the hefty
$4.99 price tag and the lackluster Marvel cosmis heavyweight story by DnA? The Rocket Raccoon and Groot storyline in the back-half. Someone please bring back the
Guardians of the Galaxy or give this duo their own book! Honestly.
But again, it's gonna rely on YOU guys being the judge. Looks like there's a crossover with Avengers called "
ANNIHILATORS: EARTHFALL" coming out this September, so you might need this series to understand what's the dealio when that comes out. In addition, there's a 1:10 variant for Annihilators #4 as well, and BOTH versions of the book can be found on ComicCollectorLive.com! Simply type in ANNIHILATORS in the library search and you can decide for yourself whether or not this group flies...or should just be Annihilated.
