Review: Alright, so this is issue number seven of this series, only one final issue to go before this big Marvel Event concludes.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I am completely lost as to what’s going on, but then again, I haven’t been reading any of the tie-ins to Secret Invasion. Because of this, it just feels like this “
major event” should have been over months ago. I have totally lost interest in Secret Invasion and any “
twists” or “
turns” offered to me by Bendis in the main book has little to no impact on me. We are at a point in the story where it’s easy to predict that the Skrulls will fail and be pulverized by the underdog Marvel Heroes. It feels like the main goal of this whole thing was just to either kill-off some characters, or push has-been and under-used characters back into the spotlight (
Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Marvel Boy?)
I don’t know if it’s Yu’s art that’s confusing the hell out of me, but this issue was one big forgettable battle. Everyone’s mish-mashing together and you can’t tell who’s a Skrull and who’s not. Hell, you can’t even tell who’s a hero and who’s a villain. I’ll even go as far as saying that in some cases, you can’t tell who’s male and who’s female. Amidst the chaos there are some word balloons thrown in there to seemingly advance the plot along, but my question is.. what happened? I just read it and I have no idea what happened. People were fighting, The Skrull Queen was targeted (
I’m not even sure if she actually died or not.. there was an arrow, and Wolverine yelled. *shrugs*), Skrull-Pym pressed a button and The Wasp became giant. The last panel had the Heroes (assumingly) screaming in pain surrounded by little black bubbles everywhere. I have no clue what this means for our Heroes or the Skrulls.
Personally, I didn’t really like Yu’s art here. I’m not one of those Leinil Yu haters, but he’s not one of my favorites. The whole thing was rather forgettable in my opinion.
All of this is not to say that I will not get the final issue (hey, I made it this far), but unless you have been religiously following Secret Invasion, I don’t see why you would want to buy this issue. There isn’t even any really cool face-offs, just some shooting, shouting and a big pile of dead bodies in Times Square.
I really wanted to give this a favorable review, but I just can’t seem to bring myself to do so. Secret Invasion is losing all of its momentum and steam with me and I fear that it will be nothing more than a distant memory once issue number eight is done and over with.
Bottom Line: Don’t take my word for it, Alien Invasions just aren’t my bag.
Side Note: My best guess is that issue makes no sense to me because I get the feeling that it is a staple to align all of the major tie-in books to come together in one spot before the big ending.
