Warren Ellis has his fans. He has made his opinions about non-creator owned work known. This said, I have to wonder if he's truly crafting a story to add to X-Men mythos or just collecting a paycheck.
At this point I have to pick up the next issue to see where this is going, but right now, this is only worth 2 stars. Agent Brand reveals that a scientist has been using Beast's research to reanimate dead mutants and somehow create huge bio-sentinels out of them. Not Karima Shapandar or Basion-sized Sentinels, but HUGE robotic Sentinels that we all know. Coming out of regular sized mutants.
Also, this scientist is retooling DNA of Krakoa and the Brood to use against them. Convenient.
Along the line, we have snappy Whedon-like dialogue like
Wolverine saying he's getting a "stabby" feeling and calling himself a can opener.
Cyclops being so out of character replying to the above line with "You say something? Something you want to say to my face?" Followed up later with "I want to know who this person is. And KILL him"
Bum Bum BUUUUMMMMM!!!!! What is he a mafioso?
Armor is quickly becoming quite annoying trying to be the cute snarky young one.
This title is just falling into the SyFy channel equivalent of the X-Men team. Trying to be relevant, but ultimately falling short compared to other titles that are "major motion pictures". Mind you, the first Ellis arc was about the same deal practically, only having Forge as the scientist who is tinkering with mutant genes to try to bring them back. There were Sentinels present there too, only those were from an alternate reality, another plot thread the X-Universe can live without please.
