I was always intrigued with The Warlord from First Publishing. Now DC has brought the character back from oblivion and I have a chance to see if Mike Grell’s creation resonates with this new reader. I have to answer in the affirmative. I like the introduction of Morgan as an unexpected event in the middle of the story. Beginnings are critical to any story, and this one is no exception. By starting the story in the present with some exciting characters and situations, bringing the spaceman tumbling down to Earth as a prelude to the introduction of Warlord and giving us a hint as to how Morgan came to be in Skartaris gives a newcomer like myself an easy introduction to the developing story. Being a complete ignorant of the rich tradition that The Warlord represent, I really appreciate the way the first issue has been developed and I’m looking forward to the rest of the issues that I have purchased and will be reading as soon as I finish this review.
The cover art and the interior art are expertly done by Joe Prado and Walden Wong. David Curiel’s coloring is masterful and complements the penciling and inking of the above artists. Even the lettering by Rob Leigh is worthy mentioning as it makes the comic readable unlike others I have seen, which takes a while to get use to.
