“Salvage, Part 1 of 5”
At the conclusion to the Secret Invasion, the S.W.O.R.D. orbital prison is destroyed. In an act of compassion, the guards release the prisoners to face their deaths as free men. Some of the prisoners have other ideas.
Down on Earth in the abandoned Outback town that housed the X-Men so many years ago, Rogue sits in seclusion, trying desperately to quiet the voice of Mystique, whose essence Rogue had absorbed months ago. She also tries to regain control over her powers. She isn't alone for long, as a supposed anthropology student ruins her solitude. Rogue is suspicious, and she ought to be.
Across the world, Charles Xavier recruits Gambit to accompany him to approach Rogue. The Professor claims it is a mission to provide Rogue the help she needs, but for which she won't ask. On top of this, a Shi'ar salvage vessel finds itself near Earth, and decides that they would score a coup if they could bring a prize to Emperor Vulcan, and they are after Rogue's anthropologist friend, who must now drop her disguise.
