About Gunfighter

As the popularity of Western themed books grew in 1948, E.C. converted its title Fat and Slat to Gunfighter. E.C. had been testing the waters of the growing field of horror comics in 1950 in some of their crime-themed titles, and converted Gunfighter to Haunt of Fear, one of three such conversions.

The conversion of the title and continuance of the numbering scheme was an attempt on E.C.'s part to save money on postage. They were hoping to continue the US Postal Service would allow them to work under the shipping contract that they had entered with the discontinued title, rather than enter into a new agreement, a more expensive proposition. This arrangement did not last long, and they revised the numbering system after three issues.
