Doctor Morton Kirk believed that the Earth would soon be destroyed by a meteor. So he rocketed his son Johnny into space to save him. However Superboy saves the Earth from the meteor, but is unable to find young Johnny.. He promises Dr. Kirk that he would find his son.
Years later Johnny's rocket crashes on Earth, now possessing super-powers of his own the now Superman takes young Johnny in as his legal guardian.
Superman however soon discovers that his own powers are disappearing due to exposure to a space poison aboard Johnny's rocket ship.
