*In the second century of man, the gods of Akashik created the divine warrior Devi to fight the renegade dark lord Bala. Centuries later, when Bala rose again to threaten the worlds of god and men, Devi was reincarnated in Tara Mehta, a young woman in the city of Sitapur. Coexisting with Tara thanks to the intervention of the priest Agantuk, Devi defeated Bala once again. She was aided by inspector Rahul Singh of the Sitapur police, who seemingly plunged to his death. Unbeknownst to our heroine, Agantuk managed to save Singh, who lapsed into an unusual coma which baffled his friend Dr. Rao.
Devi decided to remain in Sitapur, serving as the city's protector. However, the razor-clawed Apsara assassin Kratha stalked Devi, attacking her at the city docks. Sandy, a journalist, was critically wounded by Kratha in an attempt to gain the advantage over Devi. Meanwhile, Rahul woke from his coma possessed by the spirit of the White Horseman, who declared his intent to kill Devi. Agantuk and Dr. Rao raced to the docks, only to find Kratha and Devi at the Horseman's mercy. *Source: Devi #15
