Beginning the adaptation of the novel, this is the story of Bean, a frail child surviving by his wits in the city of Rotterdam. Initially considered "not worth a bean" by the other homeless kids, he engineers a way for the smaller children to fend off the bullies who police the local soup kitchens. This brings him to the attention of the nuns who futilely try to feed and educate them. One Sister, in particular, is astounded by his intellect, and just might have the means for his escape from the streets.
