In 2008, the Hero Initiative created the "Hulk 100" project. 100 different artists were given special sketchable covers and commissioned to create unique one-of-a-kind covers for each book.
The books were then auctioned off and proceeds were given to the Hero Initiative, a non-profit organization that assists aging and/or struggling comic creators with financial aid for medical bills and other expenses.
A book containing images of the different covers were released. Similar projects include Ultimate Spider-Man (VOL 1) #100 and Wolverine: Weapon X #1.
A 50-artist project involving the Archie characters is currently in development.
Some copies of the HULK #1 Hero Initiative covers (such as the instance seen here) remain in the prototype unsketched stage and were given to companies and individuals that helped participate in making the event a reality.
