"The Master Assassin of Mars-- Chapter 6: The Lady and the Lion!"
Just after besting Chan Tomar in hand-to-hand combat, neither John Carter or his wife, Dejah Thoris have a chance to catch their breaths as Orovar guards rush in on the scene.
Selfsame guards fall victim due to over-eagerness to avenge their Jeddak; the fallen Chan Tomar. One leap down to a lower walkway sets John and Dejah on the path of escape from Karanthor. Those 'orrible Orovars give chase by air, though.
There's no way out, but to stand and fight off the winged horde. A few are slain before their leader, Gar Karus orders a new tactic. After the bridge beneath their feet is shattered, John and Dejah plummet to certain death.
They are both spared and confined to a dungeon. Leering over them, stands Chan Tomar. John had failed to finish the job on him properly. Chan, in turn has a gruesome end in store for the lovers. Carter feels as though they may never get free of this cursed city.
John is marched into a huge amphitheater packed to the capacity by a raucous, salivating crowd. They want to see blood. Preferably that of the Red Martian hussy, Dejah Thoris - who's chained eniticingly, to a stake, ready to be fed to a hungry Bantha (sorry, wrong franchise)..... Banth.
Alone and unarmed, the Prince of Helium grapples with the many-legged Banth lion. Jasoomian-born brawn and bravura wins the contest, but Chan Tomar is disappointed with the result and shoots an arrow intended to kill Dejah, which wounds her shoulder instead.
John wrenches her free from the stake and performs one of his mighty leaps from the stadium pitch onto the Jeddak's podium. Chan springs to defend himself after his guards fall (you can't get good help anymore these days), but he is struck down from behind by his former sex-slave, Dejah Thoris.
This should be a new beginning for John and Dejah, but in reality, their problems begin anew.
