"The Air Pirates of Mars, Chapter 9: Armageddon... at Last!"
It's war! Thousands of skyships launched from Helium head outward to their destinies, possible deaths and deification. At the head of the armada flies John Carter with Dejah Thoris. They argue over Dejah's involvement in the coming battle, but she quickly dampens his sexist opinions. Even on Mars, women crave equality.
Youthful warrior, Kantos Kan and his faithful friend, the dim-witted Grogg occupy another ship. Kantos' thoughts are focused on gaining revenge on their enemies for causing the death of his beloved Lyssia.
The "Great One" hears word of the imminent attack and readies the Council of Five's forces. Their underground headquarters are rocket-boosted into the air.
When the irresistible force of the airships meets the immovable object of the floating fortress, something has to give. An energy field that protects the flying battle fort is pierced and the heroes of Helium skitter through.
Charged with planting explosives around the fortress, Tars Tarkas begins to question his subservience to the Red Men's race. His internal conflict is concluded when he encounters one of his own Tharks, who's disillusioned with him.
Kantos Kan learns too readily a second time, that innocents are casualties of war too. There's only moments left before the big house blows. Which it does, resoundingly.
Dejah warns that she doesn't think this is the end of the Council, but John laughs at her premonition. There's that sexist streak again. We will see who has the last word, my friend. We shall see.
