While looking out over the Sands of Sukurvia, young Jedit Ojanen witnesses a flying beast crash into the desert. Rescuing the beast's rider, Johan, Jedit returns to his village, where the council rules that Johan should be executed before he can cause any harm. Disagreeing with the council, Jedit flees the village with the Johan. The two soon find themselves captives of the Sand Warriors, where they meet Hunding Gjornersen. After being rescued by Adira Strongheart, Hunding and Jedit explore the city of Palmyra, where they find Johan making plans to invade Jedit's village.
