*Though their home was founded on the traditions of the Maya, the denizens of Colombiana don't much believe in the Long Count. Over five hundred years have passed since the Mayan and Aztec tribes threw the Europeans out of the land of the Sun, and Columbiana remains strong. Through its rich and varied history, the land has remained in the hands of its people... so to believe in the end of Mayan calendar, the end of the world: it's mythology, superstition, they claim - and even the warnings of the great dragon Quetzalcoatl have not changed their minds.
But now the time of closure has come, and Carmen Sandoval, a 23-year old national sports hero, is the only one heeding Quetzalcoatl's warnings. Raised on the streets of hte barrio, the poorest district of Nueva Cempoala, Colombiana's capital city, she learned the tools and tricks of survival, from dirty streetfighting to how to fend away the diablos, the street demons. She has returned home to save her friend, to save her city, and to save her world. But there is more to her story and her history than she ever knew, and she is about to be burdened with a terrible and righteous task.
The year is 2012.
This is the end of the Long Count. *Source: Long Count #1
