A scientist works in seclusion in the desert, trying to perfect the ultimate acid. He is bothered by a boy whose car has broken down, and has come seeking help. The boy pesters the scientist with questions as the scientist completes his formula, but the boy's last question of how the acid will be contained goes unanswered as the terrible acid burns through the lab and to the center of the Earth.

In his despair, he strangles his pet cat, then is compelled to paint a picture of it, capturing the soul of the cat in the picture. In desperation to keep painting, he murders his model, and is caught by someone who recognizes the soul of the missing model in the painting.

Pete Travis needs a way to repay his gambling debts. His rich aunt has a fear of bats that Pete exploits, and soon her frail heart gives out. Ironically, Pete is visited by a bat himself that night, and doesn't survive to inherit the money.
