"Triumph and Torment"
The Aged Genghis dwells in his cave, studying mystic arts since the dawn of human history. Every 100 years, he calls all of the Earth's Masters of the Mystic Arts to the Temple of the Three for a contest to determine the Earth's Sorcerer Supreme. The Three turn out to be the collective Vishanti, Oshtur, Hoggoth and Agamotto, the deities that provide the mystic might behind much of this world's magic. When the participants arrive, among them are Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom, the latter being a surprise to all involved. The contest proceeds, and Doctor Strange wins. With the title goes an obligation to grant a boon to a petitioner, and Doom requests that Strange aid him in his attempts to free his mother's soul from the clutches of Mephisto. Strange agrees, and what follows is a twisted tale of deception, temptation and redemption.
This graphic novel collects Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment (Marvel Graphic Novel #49), Doctor Strange (1974) #57, and material from Astonishing Tales (1970) #8.
Also collected in this graphic novel are two stories (from Marvel Fanfare #16 and #43) illustrated by Mike Mignola. Both star Namor the Sub-Mariner and are collected here for the first time.
