URBAN LEGEND
Talking to Star Trek Magazine exclusively from the set, Karl Urban, the new Dr. McCoy, reveals how much J.J. Abrams’ movie is honoring its predecessor. “Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman have written a fantastic script. I really feel they have managed to capture the essence of what Gene Roddenberry created in 1966.”

LIKE FATHER…
Avery Brooks has proved the most elusive of the Star Trek captains, not often granting interviews about his time as Benjamin Sisko. However, he sat down at FedCon in Germany last summer to look back at his years in the center seat. “I was fascinated by him. A man having to deal with loss. A man having to raise a child, and a male child to boot, by himself. A man who is required to defend humankind to some other intelligence in the universe. To discover who the man is I found challenging, so I said yes.”
…LIKE SON
FedCon reunited Cirroc Lofton once more with his screen father, Avery Brooks, and the affection between the two men is palpable. Star Trek may have finished shooting eight years ago, but it’s still a large part of his life. He recalls why he thinks the show worked so well. “The writers we brought in were very gifted. They made sure that race and religion and sexuality were addressed and exposed. A lot of people related to those, and that’s why I think we were successful.”
