Issue Spotlight
EMBRACING THE UNIVERSE
William Shatner, AKA Captain James T. Kirk, looks back over his career in the latest issue of Star Trek Magazine: “I was amazed at how incidental decisions made in one part of your life affect another part, how interrelated everything you do is and how unconscious we are when we make those decisions and how different it might be if we were more conscious of the decisions that come back and haunt us.”

REOPENING HAILING FREQUENCIES
We catch up with Zoe Saldana, the new Uhura, who reveals how working on the new movie has brought out her hidden Trekker: “Of course, I always knew about Star Trek, but I never got into it when I was younger. But now I enjoy it so much. I didn’t want to watch episodes of the show [before we filmed the movie] because I was afraid of getting into a habit. I was stepping into the shoes of someone who already existed. Nichelle did such a wonderful job. I wanted to pick all the special things that will remind the fans of her.”
CELEBRATING THE ORIGINAL SERIES
We take a fresh look at the series that started it all off, examining the show’s use of color, analogy and family, reassessing the much-maligned third season, chatting with animated series novelizer Alan Dean Foster, and taking a look at the opportunities provided by the new Vanguard novel series. Plus, we have new interviews with guest stars Gary Lockwood, Michael Forest and Yvonne Craig, as well as a previously unpublished interview with original series producer Robert H. Justman.
RE-MASTERPIECES
As the Star Trek Remastered project draws to a close with the release of the DVD box sets, we chat with producers Michael and Denise Okuda, Niel Wray and David Rossi about some of the pitfalls and potential, complete with all new imagery from the episodes. “When we added things,” Mike Okuda notes, “We tried very hard to maintain the original flow of the storytelling. Star Trek belongs to Gene Roddenberry and his team, and we tried never to forget that.”
