TWO SPOCKS FOR STAR TREK
Both Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy will play Mr. Spock in the Star Trek movie, J.J. Q’S TIPS
Right from the very first scenes of Encounter at Farpoint, John de Lancie made his mark on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and would go on to plague Captain Jean-Luc Picard throughout the series’ seven years on air, before turning his attentions to Deep Space Nine and the crew of the Starship Voyager. We take him back 20 years to the start of a legend. “You knew that you were doing something iconic and special,” he recalls of his very first day on the ST:TNG set...
THE FIRST LADY
Majel Barrett Roddenberry is commonly called The First Lady of Star Trek because she was married to creator Gene Roddenberry. But her contributions to the series far outweigh that. She played Number One in the original pilot and participated in some way in every Star Trek venture, making her most memorable mark as Lwaxana Troi on ST:TNG. Although she usually played Deanna’s mother as an outspoken, free-spirited character, in episodes like Half a Life and Dark Page she revealed the character’s serious side...
DRAWING THE FUTURE
In 1987, hoping to capitalize on the tremendous excitement generated by the new show, DC Comics (who at the time had the license for Star Trek comic books) released a six-issue mini-series based on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Mike Carlin, the writer of those first ST:TNG comics, recalls that “the Captain, emphasized to be French in the series Bible, was cast as British actor Patrick Stewart. So there was an awful lot of “French” stuff we threw into the comics for Captain Picard that, clearly, we shouldn’t have!”
